Split Rock Lighthouse is one of the most iconic lighthouses of the north shore. It was built in response to the Mataafa Storm of 1905 in which 29 ships were lost or damaged. By 1910 it became operational and quickly attracted tourists. It guided ships until 1969 where it was retired by the U.S. Coast Guard. It is now part of the National Register of Historic Places and a state park operated by the Minnesota Historical Society.
